What was his answer from your reading? Do you believe that Descartes gave an adequate answer? Explain, in your opinion, why or why not?
Answer:
Elisabeth of Bohemia asks Descartes to explain and clarify the relation, which exists between the body and the mind. She told Descartes to explain the relationship the relationship between the bodies is which she thinks material and the mind is immaterial. She asks that how can an immaterial substance act on a material substance. She further questions and asks to clarify that the mind has the ability to have an effect on the body but how does the body have the ability to act on mind, and how soul being independent and immaterial.
Descartes, the great philosopher in response to Elisabeth’s question told that he thinks that the body and the soul is one. He wrote “Passions of Soul” dedicates to her. Descartes develops a moral philosophy. He told that the truth is that everything depends on God. He explains that the relationship of the soul and the body is a philosophy of dualism. The body and the mind are performing different function and activities but it exists in union as a single entity (Shapiro and Lisa).
The body does the function of work, action and movements. It makes us do the day to day activities and to perform all the actions. The main function of the mind is to think. Descartes says that anything one experience as inanimate bodies belong to our body and anything, which does not belong to the body, belongs to our soul. The soul is the place where we have our thoughts and passions, thus, the mind the body interact with the soul through the pineal gland located in the brain (Descartes and René).
I believe that Descartes was not able to convince Elisabeth since his reply to the letter was that he told that she I too philosophical. It is important for one to understand the principles of metaphysics as described by Descartes since it gives us knowledge of God.
