THM-211 Sustainable tourism

Question

Answered

Students are required to keep a Portfolio on a weekly basis and to submit it for coursework assessment. This facilitates ongoing learning that draws connections between current events/opportunities/issues andthe course material.Specifically, the aims of the Portfolio are to:
• foster an interest in current events relevant to understanding and framing sustainable tourism andassociated local, regional and global issues
• encourage students to read broadsheet newspapers, journals, and credible online resources, etc.
• explore how current events relate to course content/discussions
• help students feel engaged with weekly readings and topics in this course
• highlight the topics that interest students (and those that don’t)
• encourage creativity, open debate, critical analysis and thinking ‘outside the box’
To put together a Portfolio, students are required to:
• Buy/create a large scrapbook or create some other format for gathering and presenting portfolio contents– this can be done as a digital scrapbook (e.g., in MS Word or Powerpoint), as a paper scrapbook (cuttingand pasting), or by simply presenting articles/material and your written reflections in a binder or folder.
• Keep up-to-date by reading the daily and/or weekend broadsheet newspapers, supplements, journals, online media, etc. – things that are “news” focussed.
• Cut out or photocopy articles, such as news reports, commentaries, editorials, book reviews, photographs or advertisements which they find relevant to that week’s topic and cumulative learning inthe course.
• Collect other innovative ideas for relevant articles. Articles downloaded from websites (e.g., companiesand organizations) are acceptable, but there should be no more than three within the total.
• Paste/fix articles into the ‘Portfolio’.
• Give complete source references, including: name of newspaper, journal etc.; date of publication;authour.
• Have at least 8 items/articles for a complete portfolio…over an 8-week period.
• Write a commentary ofcompany the articles. This should summarise the mainideas of the article and show how they relate to course topics and readings. Higher marks are givenwhere commentaries refer to academic resources i.e. texts and readings or other resources or lecturecontents…rather than random musings.
• Write an Introduction/Executive Summary explaining the purpose and contentof the portfolio and how it relates to the idea/objective of Sustainable Tourism. You may not know orrecognize your “theme” until you’ve gotten into the project and started to build your portfolio.
• While working on the portfolio, refer to the assessment criteria as below.
