Evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of the approach you used in the case study, in terms of internal coherency and practical use.
Defend the conclusion you reached in the case study by answering counterarguments.

Answers:

1.
The theory has been applied to this case study is the theory of Deontology. This is the theory that is duty-based whereby actions are moral if they abide by the duty or principle prescribed by normative standards, reason, and values, and not on the consequences of the action (Heinzelmann, 2018). This theory provides relevant answers to this clinical issue due to a number of reasons. First, the actions taken by the doctor gave him the greatest amount of satisfaction and happiness. The doctor was not happy to see Mr. Perry living in pain and agony. The doctor was distressed and he had to do something to save the situation. The doctor had to wait for Mr. Peery to make the decision because the life is his’ and no one can make life decisions for anyone. Secondly, Mr. Perry decided to have the Pacemaker deactivated. This is because at the current situation he was in pain and the only way to relieve him from the pain was to deactivate the pacemaker. Mr. Perry didn’t look at the consequences of his action because at the current situation his action was abiding by the duty or principle prescribed by normative standards, reason, and values. Moreover, the theory also states that actions are right if only they yield the highest level of joy to an individual (Heinzelmann, 2018). The question here is whether Mr. Perry’s action gave out the highest satisfaction. The answer can be contradictory but from the look of events, it is a “yes” because, without pain, there is happiness.
2.
The approach of deontology has its strengths and weaknesses. The first strength of deontology is that it offers the foundation of humanoid dignity.   Secondly, it lays the foundation for human rights. Third, it provides the foundation for justice. Fourth, it offers the basis for inherent value. Additionally, the theory ensures that commitments, contracts, and promises are kept (Heinzelmann, 2018). By having the pacemaker removed, Mr. Perry respected his human dignity which is opposed to suffering. He felt that he had achieved something inherent. The doctor, on the other hand, had to respect the decision of his patient has the approach of deontology emphasis. The weakness of this theory is that it lacks sound objectives of consequentialism. For instance, Mr. Perry made the decision of having the pacemaker removed yet he knew this would lead to his death. He did not care that his action had the consequences of leaving an empty to his family and the society in general (Tenenbaum, 2017).
3.
The conclusion is that Mr. Perry didn’t make the right decision. The question is how comes he didn’t make the right decision yet he relieved himself of the pain? The answer to this is that Mr. Perry should have consulted the doctors because he actually left his family and society in great pain. If he consulted his doctor and asked for advice, maybe he would have survived and added more value to the society. Suffering is a normal thing in life and they are what makes us strong. We can opt to take our lives because of suffering (Tenenbaum, 2017).
