Peplau’s theory: Does the application of this theory differ based on the population focus (individuals, families, communities, and special populations)? Why or why not? Use examples from your current practice to illustrate differences or similarities
Answer:
Gilkes (2017) describes Peplau’s Theory as the ability of a health officer understanding themselves and the behaviors of the client. This theory’s focus is on the therapeutic and interpersonal relationship between the health practitioner and the patient. It is a requirement by this theory that the health professional attends to the interpersonal needs and processes between them and the patient (Nursing Theories, 2011). There are four phases of developing the patient-nurse relationship: orientation, whereby the patient is in need and seeks the nurse assistance; identification, the patient and the nurse get to know one another,; exploration, the patient derives the value of the help offered to him and resolution whereby the patient adopts new goals and does away with the old ones (Hochberger and Lingham, 2016).
Hagerty, Samuels, Norcini-Pala and Gigliotti (2017) think that the quality of health care in hospitals is measured by the experience of the patient. I some clinics, the patients and families annoy the patients as they keep asking when their turn will come. In other health care facilities, patient cold be discriminated based on their religion, gender, culture, sexual orientation, social status, race and even age. Tello (2017) claims that despite the oath the doctors take to treat all patients equally, racism and discrimination is experienced in the health care facilities. These vices have deeply taken over the political, economic and social structures of the society. This definitely affects the relationship between the patient and the nurse. When the nurse is a racist, they are unable to offer quality health care services to the patient. It is also true that a person, leave alone the nurses, would shore more concern to a family member that to a stranger (Coble, 2016). This is also true in the hospital setting.
