Analysis:
Geographical analysis
St. John’s is the largest city in Newfoundland and Labrador located on the eastern island portion of the Avalon Peninsula, Canada. St. John’s has been divided in three sub sections namely City, Urban and Metro as per the density of the people and the availability of facilities (Wolf, Allice & Bell, 2013). There are very few health food stores present in St. John’s, where most of them are available in only the metropolitan part of this city. Therefore, people who live urban or city area are unable to access these stores without travelling 3 kilometre on an average (McPhail, 2013). However, the number of first food stores are noticeably high. It takes only 1.5 kilometre travelling to reach the nearest fast food stores. Lack of Grid road planning and distribution are the main causes of this situation.
Economical analysis:
St. John’s connects the Newfoundland and Labrador province to ocean while being engaged with a large scale of oil business. It also reflects the occupational availability that reduces the unemployment rate (Young & Horak, 2012). Currently, the unemployment rate of St. John’s is 7.8% where the unemployment rate of Canada is 7%. The Average weekly earnings of an average household in St. John’s is C$991 that has been increased by 4% in last year (Stjohns.ca., 2018). The per capita GDP of St. John’s is $52,000 which is higher than most of the cities of eastern Canada. However, the retail trade of St. John’s has been decreased by 0.9% however the Consumer price index increased 2.2% in 2017 (Stjohns.ca., 2018).
Recommendation:
The number of grocery stores is higher in metropolitan area that makes the people of the urban and city area more dependent on the products of fast food stores, which are very unhealthy. Therefore, the city council should allow the business organisations to build More Grocery stores in urban and city area to make the general food product available for the local people as well (Moubarac et al., 2013).
Across the Newfoundland and Labrador the price of milk and dairy product is comparatively higher than the other part of eastern Canada. Henceforth, to make these healthy products more common in regular lifestyle the city council can take cooperative action with vendor companies in order to make the price of milk products more affordable.
The number of healthy food stores is very low in urban and city area more that makes the people more dependent on the products of fast food stores, which are very unhealthy. Therefore, the city council should insist several business organisations to build more healthy food stores in urban and city area in order to make the healthy food product available for the local people as well (Tarasuk, Mitchell & Dachner, 2016).
The distribution of the food stores is not adequate in the urban and city area. It increases the travelling distance to reach the nearest food stores for the local people. Proper distribution and land permission of developing new stores of food products can eliminate these dilemmas.
